What a pro does

Power and fuel get confirmed before anything else, because between them they explain most calls where nothing happens at all. That means the breaker, the fuse in the disconnect, the burner switch on the wall or at the cellar stairs, and how much is actually in the tank rather than what the gauge claims. A stuck gauge doesn't mind lying. Tanks run dry need the line bled and the filter changed, since the last of a tank brings sludge and water with it. After that the sequence gets walked: thermostat call, control board or aquastat, safeties, ignition. Most of the time something shut the system down on purpose, and finding out what it saw is the whole job.
